Our work

Knitting bucket bag is much more than an economic activity for the Kankua people. We think of it as our ethos and our ability to withstand the passing of time. Our bags are our collective memory. Our patterns represent ideas about life and nature; they help us preserve our origins and create narratives for the future generations, who will take pride in our traditions and culture.

The different indigenous peoples that inhabit the Sierra Nevada in Santa Marta Colombia share the bucket bag as a cultural icon. Through them and the way we use them, we express our believes.

The Kankua bucket bag has a series of particular colours, materials and patterns that make them unique. Hand knit using fique fibres (manguey) and natural dyes, they represent our heritage and ancestry.

We have also taken the knowledge of our traditions and created new narratives that represent our current lifestyle, which we share with the world. Using our patterns we knit hammocks, mantlepieces, coasters and other household items.
